Learn How to Bet on the Pro Bowl

What is the Pro Bowl?

The National Football League or NFL consists of a regular season followed by the playoffs. The teams that qualify for the playoffs then play the knockout tournament, with the competition ending with the Super Bowl.

The Pro Bowl is a unique game in the NFL because it is an “all-star” game between the best performers during the season. Coaches, staff, players and even fans can vote for which players have had the most impressive season in the regular competition, and they can be entered to the Pro Bowl shortlist.

The players are selected from both the AFC and NFL. The two conferences were separate leagues that were merged in 1970. The teams stayed in their respective conference, and played in one of the four divisions. Each league has a North, East, South and West division, each comprising four teams.

Once all of the votes are submitted, the entries are assessed by both the NFL and AFC as the organising bodies of the Pro Bowl. Both the Pro Bowl NFL and AFC teams will have a total of 44 players, including reserves.

The Pro Bowl is a highly anticipated game, although there are some minor differences in how it is played compared with the regular NFL season and playoffs.

The players play fairly and try not to go in for any 50 50 tackles that could potentially injure any player. Although it is not a written rule, most of the play is similar to a two hand touch football game. When there is a play, the defending team does not rush the punter, kicker or the holder. When play starts, the passer is not rushed either, forcing the defending team to use more tactical arrangements as opposed to speed and physicality.

The game is a highly interesting one to watch as it puts rival players from the same conference to play together and employ different tactics. While the game is almost contactless, it does not mean it is any less exciting, as the players are forced to use tricks and plays to try and close down the offending team.

The winners and losers of the Pro Bowl game are paid for their participation, and awards are presented for the Most Valuable Player, Outstanding Offensive Player and Outstanding Defensive player.

How to Bet on the Pro Bowl

The Pro Bowl is a special event that is not directly related to the NFL regular season. However, as the teams are put together for just one game, it can be difficult to bet on. Nonetheless, there are many options when it comes to placing bets.

Outrights

This is a bet on whether the NFL roster or the AFC roster will win, and it can be tricky. Once the teams are determined by the organising bodies, odds will be provided for each team. Most fans will back the conference that their team plays in, but it can be better to research each individual player.

Point Handicap

If there is a clear favourite going into the Pro Bowl, then it can be interesting to try using point handicaps. These idea of a handicap is to lengthen the odds when betting on the favourite, which of course means that they shorten the odds on the underdogs.

Halves and Quarters Bets

The players on each team may have never played together on the same team before, making it difficult to predict whether a team will play well together or whether the star studded line up will struggle. For this reason it can be more reasonable to break the game into halves or even quarters. Once the game has begun it can be easier to see which team is playing more cohesively and has a chance at winning the Pro Bowl.

Over/Under bets

These bets can be a preferable option especially in the Pro Bowl because they do not always directly relate to which team will win the game. There are various different types of over/under bets such as how many points will be scored by both teams, how many touchdowns one team will score, how many field goals will be scored by a team and many more. If the line-ups in the Pro Bowl show a lot of promise that it will be a high scoring game, then it can be worth a try to put a bet on a high scoring game.

The format of over/under bets is that there will be a value presented, such as the total number of point scored, and there will be two options; one for the game to finish with more points and one for the game to finish with less points. For example, you could bet on whether a game will have more or less than 13.5 points scored in it.

Game bets

These can include bets such as which team will open the scoring, which team will score more touchdowns, first team to score a touchdown, field goal, safety and try first amongst more bets. These bets are entertaining to place and can result in huge returns.

Player bets

The Pro Bowl is all about the individual players. It is the chance for the all-star players each season to shine in an independent game. This is why player bets are so popular when it comes to the standalone event, bets can be placed on players that relate to their performance. These can include bets such as a player to be named the MVP, a player to score a touchdown and more.
