Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras, or simply ‘Palmeiras’, as they are more commonly known, are one of the most decorated teams in South American football. Affectionately known as ‘Porco’, they have an enviable record when it comes to trophies – having won Brazil’s top-flight on ten occasions, yet this is a trophy that has deserted them since 2018.

However, in recent weeks, their Allianz Parque stadium has become somewhat of a fortress as they look to assert their dominance and turn what has been a positive season into a successful title challenge. Since November 2020, they have been coached by Abel Ferreira, who has led them to two Copa Libertadores, a Copa do Brasil, a Recopa Sudamericana, and a Campeonato Paulista, yet the league to date has evaded him. Despite rumours circulating that Ferreira could soon be on the move, with top-flight Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion looking to tempt him over, Palmerias fans are confident he won’t be going anywhere until he can add a Brasileiro Série A to the trophy cabinet.

So, what gives Palmerias supporters the confidence to believe that it will be them lifting the coveted trophy when the season culminates in November? Well, firstly, it’s the aforementioned Ferreira. The coach has his side well drilled – compared by many to a youthful Jose Mourinho he is ambitious and incredibly talented. Having turned over mid-table competition such as Botafogo with comparative ease, beating them 4-0 back in June, they are hard to beat, having kept numerous clean sheets.

With several top players throughout their team, in the likes of playmaker Raphael Vega, top goal scorer Rony and club captain Gustavo Gomez, seen by many supporters as one of the best in the club’s history, there is good reason to believe that this could once again be Palmerias’s turn to lift the coveted silverware.

Palmeiras to win or draw or lose
