The ‘Fogo’ or ‘Fire’, as the team is sometimes called, are located in Botafogo, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It was quite an honour in 2000 that Botafogo came 12th in a FIFA vote for ‘Club of the Century’ by the public. The club maintains some extraordinary Brazilian football records, as they were unbeaten for 52 games between 1977 and 1978.
After significant financial difficulties, fortunately, Botafogo found great success, won the 2021 Serie B season and returned to Serie A competition. The American investor John Textor saved the club at a time when it desperately needed new investments.
Botafogo has very serious rivals who are the other major clubs in Rio, Vasco de Gama. Flamengo and Fluminense. The so-called ‘Classico Vovo’, the ‘Grandfather Derby’, is the oldest derby in the whole of Brazil. Also, not to be missed is the ‘Friendship Derby’ between Botafogo and Vasco as the two clubs and their supporters have always been on friendly terms.
Botafogo has started to get in their stride in recent matches with a convincing win over Coritiba at home 2-0, putting them firmly in the middle of the table. A nice left-footed shot from Tiquinho Soares assisted by Carlos Eduardo in the 78th minute sealed their victory.
Generally speaking, Bota had more possession and more shots on target than Coritiba. It is also admirable how the team tackled well and ensured their passing was accurate.
Exciting news for Botafogo is that Manchester United player Edison Cavani is in talks with the club and is open to joining Serie A football when his contract ends at Old Trafford. Cavani, from Uruguay, must decide whether he wants to stay in Europe or play nearer to home with the Brazilian club.
The other story presently unfolding at the club is teenage star Matheus Nascimento who is turning heads at all the major clubs this season, including Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. He has been called ‘the saviour of the homeland’ by locals, and pundits agree he may well write Botafogo’s ‘Glorioso’ history if the club can keep hold of this hot property!
