Who Will Win La Liga 2022-23?

The Spanish La Liga is home to some of the most supported clubs in the world, such as Real Madrid and Barcelona. Historically, Real Madrid has always held more La Liga titles than Barcelona, but in recent years, with the golden generation of Barcelona players including the likes of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Gerard Pique and more, Barcelona have closed the gap on Real Madrid.

There are other teams that also have huge fan bases such as Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, Villarreal, Valencia and more. All of these teams are just as exciting to watch. Atletico Madrid has won La Liga most recently in the 2020-21 season and regularly puts in very good performances that threaten the top two.

The two favourites are Real Madrid and Barcelona, because they have won the majority of the La Ligas between them. Though punters may also want to predict which teams will fall into the top four, which is far more competitive and open to many different teams.

La Liga Title Predictions

Barcelona

Barcelona is a heavy favourite because they have been the most successful club in the league in the past 10 years. The team lost their striker Luis Suarez in 2020, when his contract was not extended and he went to rivals Atletico Madrid. This not only lost Barcelona the title to Atletico Madrid, but it was also the start of a downward spiral. Lionel Messi left in 2022, and the team suffered with consistency and finding a natural replacement for their attacking force. Despite the setbacks, Barcelona are slowly climbing back to being a title contending team. With youthful players such as Ansu Fati, Pedri and Ferran Torres, it seems like Barcelona is building up their next generation of world class players. They are a team that shows great potential to win the upcoming La Liga title.

Real Madrid

Madrid had a similar experience to Barcelona when their record goal scorer Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Juventus in 2018. The team did not take long to rebuild, using players such as Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and more to fill in the gaps. Real Madrid currently has youth players who play in the first squad such as Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo, Marco Asensio, Federico Valverde and more. The team has a good mixture of experienced players and young players, and they have a very versatile style of playing, meaning that they can definitely try to keep their lead on La Liga titles and prevent Barcelona from winning future titles.

Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid is an interesting team because some years they look like title contenders, and in others they play like top four contenders. They often receive bad publicity because many football fans think that their football style is too pessimistic and they do not try to score many goals. Football fans who appreciate the sport will realise how difficult it is to defend like Atletico do, and when they do break away they rarely waste their chances. The team has goal scorers who have high conversion rates and are interesting to watch for fans who do not mind the excessive defensive play. Atletico won the competition twice in recent years, in 2013 and 2020. The 2020 La Liga title was won with their new signing Luis Suarez, who was dropped by Barcelona, and Atletico did not pass up on the chance to sign the title winning striker for free. The signing payed off and Suarez has featured prominently in the team ever since.

La Liga Top Four Predictions

Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad has some highly exciting players, and rose to prominence after they signed David Silva from Manchester City in 2020. Silva, who was already a more experienced player, brought a lot of ideas to the team, and they began to flourish. Though Sociedad have problems with consistency later on in the season, they usually begin seasons well, and can lead the table in La Liga for the first weeks or months of the tournament. Their key players include Swedish forward Alexander Isak, Adnan Januzaj, Mikel Oyarzabal, Mikel Merino and more.

Villarreal

2021 Europa League winners Villarreal have a great manager in Unai Emery. They recently beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter finals, further establishing their presence on the international stage. In the domestic league, Villarreal are a team that has placed as low as 14th place in 2018/19, but they are usually close to the top 4 places. With the new manager and players such as the experienced Raul Albiol, and Serge Aurier, Giovani Lo Celso, Gerard Moreno, Dani Parejo and more, they have the depth to try and push for a top four finish.

Valencia

In 2003/04, Valencia won La Liga. Much has happened since then, and not all in Valencia's favour, with the team falling to a top three team around the 2010s, before they slipped to placing 11th and 12th in 2015/16 and 2016/17. Valencia placed fourth in 2017/18 and 2018/19, though they have fallen from grace since then. Despite that, this team has a history of inconsistent seasons. Managerial changes, players coming and going all affect the team, but when they are organised well, then they have potential to break into the top four.

Sevilla

Sevilla is a team that has the depth to consistently make the top four. Historically this team has had very few slips when they did not make the top six, and they usually placed either in 3rd, 4th or 5th place. Sevilla has a great squad with recognisable players such as Jesus Corona, Ivan Rakitic, Jules Kounde, Diego Carlos, Erik Lamela and many more.
