A Look at the 2022-23 Tennis Season

Current ATP Rankings

The ATP stands for the Association of Tennis Professionals, and organises the ATP Tour, ATP Challenger Tour and ATP Champions Tour. The organisation is also responsible for managing the tennis world rankings, and how the points are distributed to players when they win certain tours or tournaments. The Grand Slams, Olympic tennis tournament, Davis Cup and ITF World Tennis Tour are not organised by the ATP, but tennis players who win these tournaments will still receive points in the ATP Rankings.

Novak Djokovic is currently leading the World Rankings, followed by Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev in second place, German tennis player Alexander Zverev in third place, Rafael Nadal in fourth place and Stefanos Tsitsipas in fifth place.

Now that Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are entering the final years in their careers, the doors will slowly open for younger players who can define a new generation in world tennis. Players such as Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and many more, are climbing up the world rankings. These players have already shown their great ability and what makes them even more exciting to watch, is the fact that they have yet to reach their peaks, which means that they will likely dominate the ATP Tours and Grand Slams of the future.

Top Tennis Players To Watch In 2023

Alexander Zverev

Born in 1997, this German tennis player is a strong contender to become world number one in 2023. Zverev had already won three titles by age 21, and won Olympic Gold in 2020 for Germany. He has yet to win a Grand Slam, although he has performed well in the Slams he has entered. He came to the semi-finals of both the Australian and French Opens, in 2020 and 2021, and reached the finals of the US Open in 2020 but lost in a close match against Dominic Thiem. He is currently ranked number 3, the highest in his career so far.

Dominic Thiem

Thiem may be a more recognisable name in the world of tennis for fans who followed the Grand Slams between 2017 and 2020. The Austrian player, who was born in 1993, reached the finals of the French Open two years in a row in 2018 and 2019, though he was beaten both times by Rafael Nadal. He also reached the Australian Open finals in 2020, where he was beaten by Novak Djokovic. After losing the Australian Open, Thiem went on to the US Open where he won his first Grand Slam, beating Zverev in the finals. Thiem is a highly talented tennis player, although due to a wrist injury he had to miss the last part of the 2021 season and the beginning of the 2022 season. This made him fall to 91st place in the rankings, but he is expected to return to the top 10.

Stefanos Tsitsipas

This Greek tennis player was born in 1998 and has an uncanny resemblance to his hero Roger Federer. He plays with a similar style as well, having an extremely strong one handed backhand and being an all court-player. He also has the additional advantage of being 1.93 metres tall with a strong serve. Tsitsipas has already won 8 career titles to date and sits in fifth place in the world rankings. Tsitsipas has not won a Grand Slam in his career yet, but he came extremely close to a win at the French Open in 2021 when he went two sets up against Nadal in the finals. He could not finish off the clay court champion in the end, and Nadal won the French Open in an epic comeback.

Daniil Medvedev

Currently sitting in second place in the world rankings, Medvedev is one of the most exciting tennis players to watch nowadays. Born in 1996, the Russian stands at 1.98 metres tall and has a hugely powerful serve that can reach speeds of 225 km/h. He is highly rated by his peers and has already ranked as number one in the world, albeit for a few weeks only. Medvedev has a total of 13 career titles and has reached two Australian Open finals, in 2021 and 2022, though he lost to Djokovic and Nadal. He won the US Open in 2021, beating Djokovic in the finals and securing his first Grand Slam title.

Casper Ruud

This Norwegian player currently sits at a career high number seven in the world rankings. He was born in 1998 and is a highly regarded prospect in the world of tennis. Currently the highest ranking Norwegian player in history, Ruud is an excellent player who favours the clay courts just like his idol Rafael Nadal. He has won seven career titles though he has yet to win any Grand Slams. Ruud may not be the first name that comes to mind when thinking about the immediate future, as he is still quite young and has yet to establish a presence in the bigger events, although he does have good momentum on the back of winning a seventh ATP title.

Carlos Alcaraz

This teenager, born in 2003, is currently one of the most talked about tennis players. Sitting in ninth place in the world rankings, he has already won four ATP titles and has played in all four Grand Slams. His best record at the Grand Slams was when he reached the quarterfinals in the US Open in 2021. In 2022 he beat Casper Ruud to win his first Masters 1000 title, becoming the youngest men's champion in the tournament's history. He, like Ruud, may not go to number one in the 2023 season, but it seems highly likely that he will improve on his performances and climb up the world rankings.
