A Look Ahead to the 2022-23 Bundesliga

The German Bundesliga is one of the most exciting domestic leagues in football. It is home to many top teams including the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Monchengladbach, Schalke 04, RB Leipzig, amongst many more.

The league is famous for having teams that perform very well in Europe and for promoting youth players. Many of the top talents in world football today made their debuts in the Bundesliga, where they could play regular first team football. German football can be very fast and top teams enjoy dominating games with a lot of ball possession and putting a large amount of pressure on their opponents when they lose the ball. When it comes to predicting which team will win the Bundesliga, most punters would have their money on Bayern Munich, simply because they have dominated the Bundesliga in modern times.

Bundesliga Winners Predictions

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich will win their 10th consecutive Bundesliga at the end of the 2021/22 season, and they show no signs of slowing down. They usually dominate the league and finish at the top of the table ten points clear of the runners up. In the last 5 years there was only once when they did not fully dominate, which was in 2018 when they finished 2 points clear of Dortmund. With Bayern the question is usually not whether they will win the league but by how many points.

Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund have one of the biggest fan bases in football. They are very much the second team in the Bundesliga, last winning in 2011. Despite this, the team has quite a large selection of stars who have performed excellently. One factor that plays heavily against Dortmund is the fact that many of their star players are bought after they have successful seasons, though if they manage to keep some of these players then they may pose a serious threat to Bayern.

RB Leipzig

Leipzig are an up and coming team in Germany that first appeared in the Bundesliga in 2017. This team has a mixture of older and younger players, many of which are not German nationals. They had three successful seasons under Julian Nagelsmann, their former manager who went to Bayern Munich, and though they have now fallen out of favour in the 2021/22 season, they are sure to bounce back in the upcoming seasons.

Bundesliga Top Four Predictions

Bayern Leverkusen

Leverkusen usually find themselves around the top four. In recent years they have fallen just out of the top four but they are a team that are quite consistent and have shown improvement in the past season of 2021/22. The team is also rather mixed, with players from various European countries in the starting line-up. The team’s statistics in the league reveal that they like to shoot a lot, however, they do not have the best conversion rate. They do score a lot, despite the low conversion rate, though they also concede, which may hamper their dreams of finishing in the top four.

Borussia Monchengladbach

Borussia Monchengladbach are a team that have had a turbulent few years recently. They have changed managers 5 times in the past 10 years, which does not sound like a lot, but six of those years were coached by 2 managers. They have finished in the top four but also finished at the bottom end of the top ten. When analysing the team, usually they have a poor first year with a new manager, but if the manager stays, then they start putting in better performances. They have trouble keeping managers but with Austrian head coach Adi Hutter, they may be able to climb back up the table in the following years.

Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg suffers from even more inconsistency in their football. In the past 10 years they have finished in second place, as well as just above relegation in 16th place for two years in a row. The team finished in the top four in 2020/21 but in the 2021/22 season they dropped below tenth place. Despite yo-yoing from top four to the bottom of the table, Wolfsburg has many positive traits in their football. They have a few top quality players who show signs of improvement and under their new manager Florian Kohfeldt they are slowly finding some winning form. They were performing better in the early stages of the current season, but in November and December they had a run of bad form. They will hope to finish this season on a high and try to start the next season with some convincing performances.

The Unpredictability of the German Bundesliga

There are two things that are extremely common in the Bundesliga, one is that Bayern are always going to be favourites to win, and the other is that apart from the top three, no team is untouchable. What is meant by this is that the top four in each year almost always changes, as different teams have more successful runs or put together great squads who are capable of wins. These top four and mid-table teams usually struggle to keep hold of their star players, as they are either bought by Bayern Munich or by clubs in foreign leagues, where the pay may be higher.

Each year there are Bundesliga teams that go up and down in the league rankings, making it a highly difficult league to predict, but if football fans keep an eye on the managerial changes, this should help indicate which teams are going in an upward direction and which may be spiralling downwards.
