Learn to Bet on the Novo Basquete Brasil

Introduction to the NBB

The Novo Basquete Brasil is Brazil's premier basketball league for men. The league used to be known as the Campeonato Brasileiro de Basquete, which ran from 1965 until 2008. It was then restructured by the Liga Nacional de Basquete, the organising body of all basketball leagues and competitions in Brazil.

The league is played every year between 17 basketball clubs in Brazil. There is a regular season, in which all the teams play in a double leg robin round format, playing both home and away. After the teams have all played their 32 games in the regular season, the top eight teams in the league rankings proceed to the playoffs. These teams are paired, the highest ranked team plays against the eighth ranked team, the second ranked team plays against the seventh ranked team, and so on. They play in a best of five games series, with the higher ranking teams taking home court advantage. The winners of the quarterfinals are paired and play in the semi-finals, which is also a best of five games series. The winners of that round proceed to the finals, which is also a best of five games series.

The winner of the finals becomes the new league champion, and they, along with the highest placing teams after them, qualify for the top tier international competition, the FIBA Americas League, and the second tier international competition, the FIBA South American League.

The league works with a promotion/relegation system, so the team that places at the very bottom after the regular season has concluded is relegated to the Liga Ouro de Basquete, the second tier basketball league in Brazil, and the winner of that league is promoted to the Novo Basquete Brasil.

NBB Betting Guide

There are many different types of bets to explore for every game in the Novo Basquete Brasil, and it may seem a bit daunting for those who are new to basketball betting. However, it is all very simple and here we will explain each of the standard basketball bets.

Basketball Bets

Full Time Result

These are bets on which team will win a game. For example, in a game between Flamengo and Franca, punters can put their money on either team to win the game. The favourite in the game will have shorter odds and the underdog team will have longer odds.

Handicaps

Bettors can modify the odds on the favourite or they can reduce the risk of betting on the underdog with point handicaps. Basketball is a relatively high scoring game, meaning that there will be numerous point handicaps that can be set, offering punters many options.

When setting handicaps such as -4.5, -5.5, -6.5 points, this will mean that the team needs to win the game by 5, 6, and 7 points for the bet to win. The higher the winning margin is set, the longer the odds, but this will also increase the risk of betting on that team.

Handicaps of +4.5, +5.5, +6.5 will work in the opposite way. A team will have a point boost and therefore, they will not need to win the game for the bet to win, as long as they do not lose by more points than specified in the bet. The higher the positive point handicap, the lower the risk of betting on the team will be, but this will also shorten the odds.

Total Points

Total points are bets on how many points will be scored between both teams during a game. There may be multiple betting lines offered, and punters can pick one and then bet on whether there will be more points scored during the game or less.

For example, in a game between Flamengo and Franca, there may be a betting line of 160.5, and punters can bet on whether there will be over that amount, which will require 161 points or higher, or they can bet on the game to finish with under that amount, which will require the teams to score 160 points or less.

Halves or Quarters

The full time result bet, handicap and total points may be offered for specific halves or quarters. These bets work in the same way only they will relate to one of the halves or quarters. This offers bettors the chance to place even more bets on the same game.

How to Research Bets

Whilst the odds are a good indicator for how likely a team may be able to win, or for how many points will be scored in the game, doing research can help bettors place more informed bets. There are numerous areas to research, such as which team is playing at home and how have they been performing on their home court, the record the two teams have against each other, where the teams are in the NBB league rankings, and whether any teams have injury problems or whether they are any missing key players.

Whilst basketball games in the NBB may offer even more bets on individual games, the bets mentioned above are a great place to start for those who are new to basketball betting.
