How to Bet on Spain’s La Liga

La Liga is Spain’s top football division. It was founded in 1929 and twenty teams take part. The league is known for producing excellent technical players and an attractive style of play. With teams such as Barcelona and Real Madrid, La Liga has fans across the world and over the years, some of the biggest name sin football have played in La Liga, such as Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Zidane, Raul, Figo and David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

La Liga was also the birthplace of the “Tiki Taka” style of football, which was developed by Pep Guardiola in Barcelona. There are several highlights each season, with matches such as El Clasico (between Real Madrid and Barcelona), the Madrid Derby, and the Barcelona vs Atletico Clasico.

As with other leagues around the world, La Liga uses a promotion system. At the end of each season, the teams that finish in the bottom three places are relegated to the Segunda Division and the top two teams from the Segunda Division are promoted to La Liga. There is then a playoff competition for the final promotion spot between the teams that finished third to sixth.

Real Madrid has won the league more times than any other club (34) and Barcelona is a distant second with 26 titles. They are followed by Atletico Madrid with 11. Other teams to have won the league are Athletic Bilbao, Valencia, Real Sociedad, Deportivo La Coruna, Sevilla and Real Betis.

Betting on La Liga

You will quickly discover that there are hundreds of different bets available for every La Liga match. You will also be able to bet on the league as a whole. The betting markets generally work on the same basic principles and you should have no problems understanding them.

La Liga Outrights

This is where you can bet on the league as a whole. The most popular bet is on which team will win the league, e.g. Real Madrid. However, there are more to be found.  For instance you can bet on a player, such as Karim Benzema or Jose Vinicius Junior, to be the highest scoring player in the league. You can also bet on a team to finish in the top four positions or bet on a team to be relegated.

Match Result

When it comes to betting on a game, this is the simplest option. For example, if Rayo Vallecano is playing Real Madrid, you simply bet on one of the teams to win or for the game to end in a draw.

Double Chance

This bet allows you to cover two of the three possible outcomes. For instance, in a game of Levante vs Elche CF, with one bet you could bet on Levante to win or a draw, or you could bet on Elche to win or a draw, or you could bet on Levante or Elche to win.

Total Goals

You will come across many different totals markets. Generally they require you to bet on whether there will be more or less of something than the given number. For instance, in the Total Goals market you could bet on their being more or less than 1.5 goals scored by both teams. You will also be able to bet on the number of goals scored by an individual team.

Goal Handicap

There are many different types of handicap bets, but the Goals Handicap is the most popular. It gives the team that is favourite to win a handicap that they have to overcome. You may see something like the following:

Levante -1.5       Elche +1.5

If you wanted to bet on Levante to win, then you would win your bet if they win by at least 2 goals. If you bet on Elche, then you will win the bet if they win or if they lose by no more than 1 goal.

Half-Time/Full-Time

This market allows you to bet on what the result will be at halftime. It means you could bet on a team, e.g. Elche, to be ahead at halftime but for Levante to win the match.

Goalscorer

This lets you bet on a player to score in a match. For example, if Real Madrid are playing then you could bet on Karim Benzema to score a goal. There are many other bets related to goal scoring, for example you could bet on a player being the first to score in a game.

Draw No Bet

You can use this bet to reduce your risk. It allows you to bet on a team to win, e.g. Levante to beat Elche, but if the game then ends in a draw your bet is refunded.

Player and Game Prop Bets

These are bets on certain things to happen in a match. For example, a player to be shown a yellow card or sent off, a player to have a shot on target, for there to be a penalty, and more.

Many More Options

It is not uncommon to see more than 500 bets available for a single La Liga game. Take some time to explore the different types so that you don’t miss any opportunities to place a winning bet.
