How to Bet on League of Legends – eSports Betting

League of Legends (LoL) is a multiplayer online battle area, or MOBA, game that was released in 2009 and has become one of the most popular eSports. Developed by Riot Games, it was inspired by Dota and is a free-to-play game that has purchasable character customisations. It did not take long for LoL to attract a large international fanbase, and it has become one of the largest eSports in the world. The first LoL World Championships was held in June 2011, and teams from around the globe went head to head for prizes from a pool of $100,000. The event was streamed to an audience of over 1.6 million viewers. Now, more than 10 years later, there are even more championships and tournaments that are held around the world in huge venues and with prizes in the millions of dollars.

What is League of Legends?

Each match in LoL features two teams of five players battling on a map. The teams have to defend their side of the map and each player controls a single character, known as a champion. There are numerous characters to choose from, and each one of these characters has a different skill set or ability, which will influence the whole team's tactics. Games last 30 to 45 minutes on average, but they can last under 30 minutes if one of the teams decides to surrender, and in rare cases, games can span well over an hour.

The point of each game is to defeat the opposing team by going to their side of the map and destroying the enemy base, called the Nexus. It is a highly tactical game, where champions can gain experience points (XP), they can win gold that can be used to boost their abilities, and there are numerous types of minions and defensive structures to overcome.

How to Bet on LoL Tournaments

Outrights

Outrights are bets that relate to a tournament or a league as a whole. You can find LoL outrights such as the outright winner of the World Championships, European Championships, or any of the other major competitions. For each of these tournaments, there are bets on all of the participating teams, and these bets will be available both before the competition has begun and once it is underway. The best odds for outright bets can usually be found before any of the matches have taken place.

To Win

For each match, there will be a bet where you can pick which team will win. It does not matter how the team wins or how many rounds they manage to finish in. If the team you pick wins, you win your bet.

By Round

In the first round of major tournaments, single-round matches are usually played, but once the tournament goes into the knockout stage, these are usually played in a best-of-five series. You can bet on which team will win the fixture and progress in the tournament, but there may also be bets that break down into individual games. Here, you will have the option to bet on which team may win the first game, the second game, and so on.

Total Kills

There may be bets offered on the number of characters that are killed during a game. There are a few variations of this bet, including total kills by team A, total kills by team B, and total kills by both teams in the game. If the fixture includes numerous rounds, then there may also be the same bets for each individual round. Basically, you can bet on whether you think the game, or round, will be a high-scoring event or not. You will not need to predict the exact number of kills in the round, but with totals you can define a range that you think the final kill number will fall into. The bet uses the over/under format, where there are multiple betting lines and each has a bet for over that line and under.

If you pick a bet such as team A with a total of 22.5 and bet over, then you will need team A to have 23 kills or more in that round. If you bet under, then you will need team A to have 22 kills or fewer during the round.

Handicap Kills

Handicap kills lets you bet on a team to beat the opposing team’s score in kills during a game. You will have multiple handicaps to pick from, and your chosen team will need to register at least that many more kills than the other team during the round. Alternatively, there are handicaps that favour your chosen team, in which case your team will have an advantage over the other team, but at the cost of shortened odds.

To make things clearer, say you bet on team A to beat team B with a handicap of -8.5. What this means is that team A should finish the round with a number of kills that is at least 9 more than team B. If you bet on team B with a handicap of +5.5 then you will need team B to either beat team A in kills or to fall within 5 kills behind team A’s record.

Many More Bets

There are also plenty of other betting opportunities, including live betting options and a range of bets that relate to specific match events. You may find bets on which team will draw first blood, which team will destroy the first inhibitor, which team will destroy the first tower, and many other intriguing bets.
