The Margaret River Pro is a surfing event that is held at the Margaret River in Western Australia. The event was created in 1985, and became a fan favourite amongst the Australian surfers as the location makes it a tough place to compete, forcing athletes to meet the challenges. The Margaret River area has many surf breaks, stretching along 130 km of coastline. The geographical location is quite unique as there is a river that meanders around the back of the coastline area into the mainland. The tides can be highly volatile, with the Cowaramup Bombora big wave surf break that is 2 km offshore and produces some of the biggest waves in Australia.

The Margaret River Pro tournament features 36 surfers, who are seeded into 12 heats comprising 3 surfers. This is called the seeding round, and surfers will have to compete against the other surfers in their respective heats. The surfers who finish in first and second in the heats advance to the round of 32, whilst the losers proceed to the elimination round. In the elimination round, the 12 surfers who came bottom of their heats are drawn into 4 heats comprising 3 surfers each. The winners and runners up of the elimination round heats will proceed to the round of 32.

In the following rounds, the surfers compete in one on one heats, where the winner advances to the following round. There are 16 heats in the round of 32, and the 16 winners proceed to the round of 16. In the round of 16, the 8 winners of the 8 heats proceed to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals comprises 4 heats, and the winners go to the semifinals. The 2 winners of the 2 heats in the semifinals proceed to the finals, where the winner becomes the new champion of the Margaret River Pro event.
